Audience left chanting ‘Oh My God’

by Show Radio 2012 on 15/05/2012

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.. but things are a little different in the case of British band Kaiser Chiefs.

It was cold and dark at the Maitland Showgrounds by the time Kaiser Chiefs were set to take to the Groovin’ The Moo main stage to perform their greatest hits lineup in anticipation for their new album ‘Souvenir’. Announced to be made up of the best singles with a couple of new songs.

As the band ran onto stage, the audience roared for what was obviously the most anticipated act of the day. Wasting little time the set started with ‘Never Miss a Beat’ and quickly reminded everyone as to what they were in for. The crazy stage antics of frontman Ricky Wilson is always a sight which will be sure to have you in complete awe as to how one man can run around so much but still belt out a near perfect vocal performance.

As the headliners continued their high voltage performance keeping the old fans pleased with favourites ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less’ and ‘Everything is Average Nowadays” and pulling out all the usual Kaiser Chiefs tricks that new fans may not of experienced live. Accompanied with the ever endearing banter between songs, including drummer Nick Hodgson’s solo and awkwardly hilarious cover of the theme from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

The second last song was truly a highlight of the entire day at the Maitland Showgrounds when the b-side song ‘Take My Temperature’ blasted off… literally. As frontman Wilson and keyboardist P-Nut performed the first half of the fast paced song from a slingshot ride located to the left of the stage. Even making it back to stage in time for the 2nd chorus.

While visually the members of the band have aged. As performers they still resemble the same rockers that started in Leeds back in 1996.

The set ended with a massive sing-a-long to ultimate head banger “Oh My God”. The same three words which would of circled around in the head of anyone who was there.

The Kaiser Chiefs proved that despite having been in the game for a while now that they can still rock.. and showing any up-and-coming bands how a real man handles a cowbell!

The Pioneering Lingo by Tian Gerrand

by Show Radio 2012 on 15/05/2012

The Lingo Iris is an iPhone 4 case with a digital radio and a FM radio receiver in it that the iPhone can use. On top of that, it also has a battery pack to give the iPhone extra battery life.

After hearing about it in a lecture at my university, I ordered the Lingo Iris online with great expectations.

I was so excited to receive it as I love radio and really wanted to be able to listen to it on the move without having to have multiple devices on me.

Before I say anything about the device itself, I would like to mention that the team that manufactures the device really impressed me. I had some questions about it that I emailed to them and they responded promptly and were keen to help further; that really put a smile on my face.

When I received the Lingo Iris, I was very happy, with the iPhone attached, it’s a pleasure to hold in hand. I bought the red model and it’s a gorgeous colour with sleek lines.

The extra battery pack is very convenient as it means I no longer have to worry about my iPhone lasting a whole day, regardless of what apps I use.

When I started to listen to digital, FM radio and to music and sound from my iPhone in general, I was rather disappointed at first. They say that the Lingo Iris actually uses the headphones as an antenna and it was only tested with the Apple headphones, I use Sony Earbuds and the signal tended to drop out for me now and then. However, on the second day of using it, it was much better and I think that’s because my headphones weren’t shaking around so much because I had the cord under my jacket instead of hanging freely.

There are also some design faults, sound from the radio receivers will only come out of the headphone jack on the Lingo Iris as opposed to the iPhone jack.

Also, the opening for the iPhone jack is only allows apple headphones to plug in.

However, both these faults are minor as all sounds from the iPhone (except sound from a phone call; ringtones will play, just not the actual call) comes out of the Lingo Iris headphone jack so there really is no need to plug into the normal iPhone headphone jack.

All in all, the Lingo is a great buy. For the radio dropping out now and then, you just need to spend time with it and work out which method will work the best for you.

The French Know How To Make Drama

May 15, 2012

Last weekend was mother’s day, so I took my mother out, like all good sons should, to see a film. However, it wasn’t just any film, it was a French film called Le Havre (its in italics to make it more sophisticated). Now I’m not connoisseur of French film but there were a few things [...]

Using Killer Pythons in New Ways

May 15, 2012

Killer pythons are by far the most versatile of candies. I once plaited 62 of them together and used them as a rope to escape with my friend Rapunzel. We planned to use her hair but she decided that she would be trendy and get a Beatles haircut two days before the big escape so [...]
